- In August 2004, the Hereditary Disease Foundation (HDF) gathered over 300 scientists – most supported by the HDF – to share their latest findings on Huntington’s disease (HD). ...
- Our intent is to raise money for the Hereditary Disease Foundation, which funds scientific research seeking cures for diseases such as Huntington's, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's. It is one of the most highly rated charities in the US, and is of personal significance to us, having lost several family members to Huntington's Disease.

- Venezuelan Kindreds Reveal Genetic and Environmental Factors Influence Onset of Huntington’s Disease: New York, New York – March 2, 2004– The age at which Huntington’s disease starts is not solely determined by the Huntington’s disease gene, as previously believed, but is strongly influenced by genetic and environmental factors, according to new findings from a team led by Columbia University Medical Center researcher and president of the Hereditary Disease Foundation Dr. ...
- The Hereditary Disease Foundation focuses on Huntington's disease, a fatal, autosomal-dominant neurological illness causing involuntary movements, severe emotional disturbance and cognitive decline. Huntington's disease usually strikes in mid-life, in the thirties or forties, although it can also attack children and the elderly. ... Because it is an autosomal-dominant disorder, each child of a parent with Huntington's disease has a 50% risk of inheriting the illness. In the United States, the prevalence of the disease is about 10 cases per 100,000 people - about 30,000 people in all. ...
- Because Huntington's disease destroys so many different capabilities - intellectual, physical and emotional - the insights gained from research on this illness are relevant to the understanding of many other, including schizophrenia, manic depression, Alzheimer's, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease), Parkinson's disease, and cancer. By focusing on Huntington's disease as a model, the Hereditary Disease Foundation targets neurological and genetic functions relevant to a broad spectrum of disorders. ...
- Formed in 1968, the Hereditary Disease Foundation spearheaded the Venezuela Collaborative Huntington's Disease Project, which led to the identification in 1983 of a genetic marker for Huntington's disease. ...
- Following that momentous discovery, the Hereditary Disease Foundation organized the Huntington's Disease Collaborative Research Group, which in 1993 captured the Huntington's disease gene - one of a newly identified class of disease genes whose signature is an excess of trinucleotide repeats; for example, the genes for Fragile X, the most common form of mental retardation, myotonic dystrophy, Kennedy's disease (spinobulbar muscular dystrophy), Haw River Syndrome, 3 types of hereditary ataxia, SCI1, Machado Joseph disease and Friedrich's ataxia. ...
- The Hereditary Disease Foundation continues its support of cutting-edge science, including the development of mouse models, studies of protein-protein interactions, strategies for gene therapy, and intercellular signaling in striatal neurons. Through grants, fellowships, the CHDI, and the workshop program, the Foundation continues to build a research community committed to the cure of Huntington's disease and related disorders. ...

- Celiac Disease and Gluten Sensitivity.
- Celiac disease, also referred to as celiac sprue, is an inflammatory condition of the small intestine precipitated by the ingestion of wheat in individuals with certain genetic makeups. ... However celiac disease can begin anytime in life. ... The extent of loss of intestinal absorptive surface area generally dictates whether an individual with celiac disease will develop symptoms. Individuals with celiac disease may experience severe symptoms such as diarrhea, weakness, and weight loss indicating a marked decrease in intestinal absorptive surface area involving much of the small intestine. ... Such individuals likely have disease limited to the proximal small bowel where iron is normally absorbed, with the remainder of bowel adequate for nutrient and fluid absorption. Other extraintestinal manifestations of celiac disease include osteopenic bone disease, tetany and rarely neurologic disorders. ... Most of these individuals have intestinal biopsies characteristic of celiac disease regardless of gastrointestinal symptomatology. Recently, with the discovery of antibodies which are specific for celiac disease, screening of families of celiacs and select populations have identified a growing number of asymptomatic individuals who have circulating antibodies and changes on intestinal biopsies characteristic of celiac disease. These individuals clearly have a gluten sensitivity but it is unclear whether they will develop the clinical features of celiac disease over time. Removal of wheat (gluten) from the diet of individuals with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity results in regeneration of the intestinal mucosal absorptive surface area and resolution of symptoms in most patients. Cause of celiac disease.
- There are two important factors that contribute to the development of celiac disease: The ingestion of wheat.
- The "Coeliac Affection" was first reported by Gee in 1888, however it was not until 1950 that wheat was proposed to be the cause of celiac disease. The evidence was based on the observation of a Dutch physician named Dicke who noted during World War II, a time when wheat grains were scarce in Holland, that children with celiac disease who had otherwise failed to thrive improved on a wheat-poor diet. ... Extraction of gluten with alcohol has further narrowed activity to smaller proline-rich proteins called gliadins which are capable of precipitating disease in previously asymptomatic celiacs. Analogous proteins exist in other grains such as rye, barley and oats and therefore these grains are also capable of exacerbating celiac disease. ...

- Especially common in children between the ages of 5 and 15, fifth disease typically produces a distinctive red rash on the face that makes the child appear to have a slapped cheek. ... Despite being called a "disease," fifth disease is actually just a viral illness that the majority of children will recover from - with no complications - in a short period of time. ...
- Fifth disease (also called erythema infectiosum) is caused by parvovirus B19. ...
- Studies show that although 40% to 60% of adults worldwide have laboratory evidence of a past parvovirus B19 infection, most of these adults can't remember having had symptoms of fifth disease. ...
- Fifth disease occurs everywhere in the world. Outbreaks of parvovirus tend to happen in the late winter and early spring, but there may also be sporadic cases of the disease any time throughout the year. ...
- Fifth disease begins with a low-grade fever, headache, and mild cold-like symptoms (a stuffy or runny nose). ...
- Older children and adults sometimes complain that the rash itches, but most children with a rash caused by fifth disease do not look sick and no longer have fever. ...
- Other symptoms that sometimes occur with fifth disease include swollen glands, red eyes, sore throat, diarrhea, and unusual rashes that look like blisters or bruises.
- In some cases, especially in adults and older teens, an attack of fifth disease may be followed by joint swelling or pain, often in the hands, wrists, knees, or ankles.
- Because the rash of fifth disease is an immune reaction (a defense response launched by the body against foreign substances like germs) that occurs after the infection has passed, a child is usually not contagious once the rash appears. ...
- In households where a child has fifth disease, another family member who hasn't previously had parvovirus B19 has about a 50% chance of also getting the infection. Classmates of children with fifth disease have about a 60% chance of getting the virus. ...
- There is no vaccine for fifth disease, and no real way to prevent the spread of the virus. Isolating someone with a fifth disease rash won't prevent spread of the infection because the person usually isn't contagious by that time.

Test Could Improve Detection of Prion Disease in HumansMonday, Feb 14, 2005 A highly sensitive post-mortem test could help scientists more accurately determine if a person died of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a human neurological disorder caused by the same class of infectious proteins that trigger mad cow disease, according to a new study supported in part by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The finding opens the possibility that such testing might be refined in the future so it can be used to detect prion disease in living people and animals before the onset of symptoms. ... Anti-Cholesterol Drug May Block Amyloid Pathology in Alzheimer’s DiseaseFriday, Jan 14, 2005 A drug designed to inhibit cholesterol production may also block the production of amyloid, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
