- Editor Taints Recently Published Hearings How Senate Historian Botched Data on McCarthy .
- Assuming, that is, that anyone actually bothers to read them—rather than relying on the gloss supplied by Senate historian Donald Ritchie, who edited them for publication. ... See "Senate Historian Clams Up When Queried on McCarthy," HUMAN EVENTS, May 12, 2003 . ... Senate historian Ritchies take on all of this is of interest, as he is the authority everyone else is quoting. ... The most charitable explanation of all this is that the Senate historian indeed hasnt read the primary sources, but instead seems to have lifted his discussion of the matter primarily from Thomas Reeves, author of a widely cited book about McCarthy. ... One McCarthy failing alleged by Ritchie, echoing the Moss dispute, was that he called up people "out of mistaken identity," a charge reiterated by the historian as subpoenaing someone who "simply had the same name as a Communist. ... Recounting McCarthys interrogation of Colemans roommate about the papers in their apartment, the historian quotes an exchange in which McCarthy said security agents had "raided" the place, to which the roommate objected, saying it was merely "searched. ... One might suppose an employee at a sensitive defense-related lab who had signed such a petition would be a legitimate subject for inquiry, or that a historian discussing the matter might trouble to note that the petitions were of this nature. ... ) As above suggested, further examples in this vein appearing in historian Ritchies comments are legion, but the cases that have been cited are perhaps enough to show the nature of the problem, and have doubtless taxed the readers patience already. ... For the moment suffice it to note that what historian Ritchie has provided is "history" only in the sense that one might accord this label to musings of the ACLU, or a lead article in The Nation. ...
21. Lord Acton on the Historian
- www.acton.org
- Lord Acton on the Historian.
- Lord Acton is rightly remembered as the historian of liberty in the context of religion and conscience, and primarily applied to politics and political thought. Acton's political views were formed by his work and experience as an historian, his discovery of the historian's need for intellectual liberty, which led to his larger concern for liberty in all spheres in which conscience might be involved. Acton thought much and wrote a fair amount about the rights and duties of the historian. This monograph will be devoted to his thoughts on the historian. I say "on the historian," not "on history," deliberately: Acton, I will argue, was a moralist, and he thought about his subject in terms of the moral duties of those who study it. ...
- In the Dictionary of National Biography, where the opening of an entry gives a descriptive term for the subject's occupation or area of importance, Acton is defined as "historian and moralist. ... In rewriting his entry for the New Dictionary of National Biography, I again describe Acton as "historian and moralist. " This unique conjunction is nowhere better seen than in his thought about the historian.
- Acton's thought on these matters was formed in the early 1850s by his apprenticeship at Munich to Ignaz von Döllinger, the leading Catholic historian in Germany. ... Objectivity had been discovered as a virtue both necessary and useful, releasing the historian from the chains of partisanship and freeing him, in the phrase of the leading historian Ranke, to show "what actually happened" (wie es eigentlich gewesen). ... But scientific history won over the historian, and the historian triumphed over the priest: Döllinger, followed by Acton, discovered and exposed the failings of his Church. In the late 1850s and early 1860s, Acton as a Catholic journalist in England and Döllinger as a Catholic historian in Germany were criticized for excessive freedom and objectivity in their criticisms of their Church. ...
- It may seem odd that the historian of political liberty should have first confronted the Church rather than the State, but in the latter nineteenth century Acton did not have to defend intellectual liberty against the State. ...
- For one whose commitment to truth was integral to his religion, this perversion by religion of the moral obligation of the historian was fundamentally evil. ... So Acton's growing hatred of persecution merged into his long-standing hatred of absolutism, initially formed under the influence of Burke but now taking shape in the context of a particular concern as an historian.

23. David Horowitz: Why I Am Not Celebrating John Hope Franklin's Birthday
- hnn.us
- ” The author was one of the university’s most celebrated academic figures – the former head of President Clinton’s Commission on Race, the author of a classic text, From Slavery To Freedom, the only faculty member to have an academic Center at Duke named after him, and the most honored and generally revered African American historian of slavery alive -- John Hope Franklin. ...
- The statement that “all whites and no slaves benefited from American slavery,” is the claim of a racial ideologue rather than an historian. ... The first question my ad raised was that if all whites benefited economically from slavery (and a responsible historian would certainly want to keep an open mind on this question) could one also maintain that free blacks did not? More importantly, the question was: if all whites alive today were beneficiaries of the wealth that slavery produced, how could one say that blacks alive today were not?.
- In fact, as a historian like Franklin should know (and acknowledge), the American Revolution changed the law of British slavery specifically to recognize the humanity and natural rights of African slaves:.
