- The National Institutes of Health (NIH), realizing the potential of rat models in understanding basic biology and human health and disease, launched the Rat Genome Program in 1995, followed by the Rat EST Program in 1997 and is poised to initiate a Rat Genome Database. These two programs and the database, which are coordinated by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) through the NIH Rat Genome Working Group (RGWG), are funded by 13 Institutes and Centers at NIH. ... In conjunction with and in addition to these programs, the NIH, through the RGWG, has convened advisory groups and workshops to discuss the opportunities that rat models offer and provide recommendations on the investments that are needed to capitalize on these opportunities.
